Safety First as FDS Achieves Environmental Standard

Fire design and system installation company, The FDS Group, has been awarded the internationally recognised standard for environmental management, ISO14001:2004.

While environmental considerations are often forced into the background where life safety is concerned, the FDS Group has worked hard to ensure that its operations are as environmentally friendly as possible whilst clearly prioritising the safety of the buildings on which it works to achieve a balance between life safety and environmental impact.

Explains FDS Director, Sam Riley: “We have a clear strategy in our approach to sustainability and have demonstrated a real commitment and focus to environmental improvement across the Group. Our policy is comprehensive and we aim to continually improve environmental performance by developing and implementing that policy.”

ISO 14001 is awarded to companies that implement an effective environmental management system (EMS), and provides a framework that allows businesses to control and reduce their impact on the environment.  In order to deliver this, FDS has trained all members of staff in environmental awareness and has ensured that its environmental policies and processes are clearly understood at all levels.

Beyond ISO14001 requirements, the company is also investing in research and development to pioneer products that complement their range of fire safety systems. This includes research into developing an air source heat pump for residential developments to overcome the issues associated with extracting heat from common corridors, with the objective of finding a method of utilising this heat within the building. Whilst research is still underway, FDS aims to introduce the industry to a solution this year.
