London Fire Brigade (LFB) has published its much-anticipated fire enforcement outcome regarding the fire incident that occurred at New Providence Wharf in May 2021.

Despite initial concerns being raised about the fire safety arrangements at New Providence Wharf, LFB’s own follow-up investigation determined that no offences had been committed under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO).

Regardless of the outcome of the report, we cannot stress enough the importance of properly maintaining smoke control systems. The Smoke Control Association (SCA) state that SDI 19 certified maintainers should be used to maintain smoke control systems as opposed to Electricians or Fire Alarm Engineers. The SDI 19 certification scheme demonstrates both the capability and resources for the maintenance and servicing of smoke detection systems and smoke ventilation systems.

To provide greater clarification, the SCA is currently in the process of developing guidance for building owners for the maintenance of smoke control equipment (Spring 2023).
