Mike Starr

Welcome – Mike Starr

What is your background?

I have a Bachelor’s degree from Lancaster University, and since graduating have worked in sales roles for almost 14 years now. I’ve been involved in the fire safety industry for more than 8 years in total, beginning with a role as a technical estimator for smoke and fire curtains. My primary focus has always been technical sales and customer account management

What was your previous role?

I’ve been working as Business Development Manager for a smoke ventilation contractor for the last two years

What does your new role entail?

My role is to assist FDS in expanding their focus to include the Midlands, the North of England and Wales by developing relationships with new and existing clients, responding to RFQs, running CPD seminars and liaising with other key stakeholders such as architects and consultants throughout the life-cycle of a project

What have you brought to the role from previous experience?

I have worked on projects for several major developers, consultants and M&E contractors in the region, and being based locally I am perfectly positioned to meet with customers at short notice in order to progress their projects.

What are your main aims and responsibilities in the role?

My main aim is to grow our customer base outside of London and the South-East, by making customers aware that FDS Contracting are now one of the only fully IFC certified smoke ventilation specialists able to offer a comprehensive turnkey supply and install package for fire consultancy, smoke ventilation and fire detection from a single provider

What attracted you to FDS and to the role?

I was attracted by the challenge of taking the company into a new territory and growing the business, building on the excellent track record and reputation of an established brand to bring a new offering to contractors and developers in the dynamic development hubs of cities such as Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and all the other cities in the region that make up the Northern Powerhouse

What has been your experience so far?

I’ve really enjoyed meeting the team and have been encouraged by the level of professionalism and dedication I’ve already seen from all areas of the business. I’ve also managed to not embarrass myself at a team night out at bowling which was a great way to get to know my new colleagues.
